Assessment type: Offline Coursework
Below is the TEL recommended workflow for a Summative Offline Assignment using Moodle for Feedback. The guidance provided is for general use.
Recommended workflow
1. Provide detailed information about the Assignment
It’s important to provide all the necessary information for students about the Assignment, including marking criteria and hand-in dates and expectations. This could be provided via a detailed resource such as a Moodle Page.
2. Create an individual Assignment Activity
Create a new assignment taking care to select an individual or Group setting as required. See Moodle Assignment settings for detailed guidance.
3. Hide the submission from Students (if appropriate)
By default Grades/Feedback will be hidden from students until you release them. If, for example, students are submitting a Video assessment, you may want to allow them to submit a link to the Moodle Assignment, but if there is no submission via Moodle, hide the Assignment link. Students can then complete and hand-in their assessment via your agreed method.
4. Manage extensions where needed
Setup extension groups and apply deadline extensions for the relevant students. Please note that granting an extension in Moodle does not include any administration of the extension request. For your local procedures for considering and granting extension requests, please consult with your Director of Studies and local Programme Administration team.
5. After the deadline, lock student submissions
If Students have provided a link or similar via the Moodle Assignment, once the due date has lapsed you can lock the submissions to prevent any changes being made.
6. Provide feedback/annotations and marks on the submission
You can now add feedback and marks online in the Moodle grading interface, or, use the batch upload/download and grading worksheet to return marks and feedback.
Use of advanced marking and feedback approaches such as Marking Guides and Rubrics is also possible.
7. Release Marks and Feedback to Students with Marking Workflow
Set the Marking Workflow to “released” so students will now be able to review their marks and feedback in Moodle.
8. Lift anonymity and unit convenor runs Grade Transfer to SAMIS
When you have finalised your grades and feedback, you can lift anonymity (lifting anonymity can be done only once for the whole cohort). Only the unit convenor (who has the Teacher + role in Moodle) can transfer the marks to SAMIS using Grade Transfer.
Notes on Moderation and External Examiners
If you want moderation to take place within Moodle, agree on a local process with your colleagues. A straightforward first step is to give your Moderator or External Examiner access to the Moodle space. For external examiners, liaise with your local programme admin team for guidance on arranging access. They can also contact DDaT to set up temporary accounts if needed, although most external examiners should already have University of Bath accounts.
Notes on Archiving Policy
An archive snapshot of Moodle is taken every year on or around the 1st August, with previous versions of Moodle being available in the Moodle Archive. Any Assignments present in Moodle at the time of the snapshot will be available in the archive to any student or member of staff who was enrolled in the course at the time that the archive copy was made. If you don’t want assignment questions to be present in the archive copy of your unit, remember to remove them ahead of archiving taking place.
