Creating Accessible Exam Papers

What makes an exam paper accessible?

An accessible exam paper is one that can be used by all students, including those who require large print, alternative formats, or digital access using assistive technology. While most students will sit a paper-based exam, designing for accessibility from the start reduces the effort required to create alternative formats later.

Accessible exam papers should:

• Be clearly formatted and easy to read in print.
• Support conversion to alternative formats, including large print.
• Work with assistive technologies when provided digitally.
• Use a familiar, consistent format that students are used to engaging with.

Key steps for preparing accessible exam papers

• Use the Microsoft Word exam paper template provided by the Examinations Office and follow the Exam paper proofreading checklists.
• Follow the University’s SCULPT accessibility guidance. In particular:
  • Use built-in heading styles and clear formatting.
  • Use clear and concise language in instructions and questions.

Important: If your exam contains mathematical notation, equations, or scientific symbols, you must use the Microsoft Equation Editor. Never use images or screenshots of equations, as these are more difficult to convert into accessible formats.

If you use a LaTeX-based workflow to create exam papers, liaise with your department to ensure accessible versions can be produced where required.
