Providing video feedback using Panopto

Published on: 04/03/2025 · Last updated on: 04/03/2025

Introduction

Below is the recommended workflow for using a Panopto assignment folder to provide annotated video feedback on student work. Video feedback often involves a screen share of a student’s written text, annotations, and an audio voiceover provided by the marker.

This approach works alongside the Moodle – Individual Assignment (summative) and Moodle – Individual Assignment (formative) recommended approaches.

Roles in Moodle and Panopto:

In line with Moodle terminology, on this page teaching staff are referred to as Teachers. Students are referred to as Students.
In line with Panopto terminology, on this page teaching staff are referred to as Creators. Students are referred to as Viewers.

1. A Creator creates an assignment folder within a Moodle-linked folder in Panopto

In Panopto, navigate to the Moodle-linked folder for your unit. Within the folder settings, create an assignment folder. Video feedback should not be saved in your personal My Folder in case you are absent from the University for some time, change job role, or leave the organisation.

2. Preparation

Before giving feedback, you should:

  • Ensure your computer’s audio and video (if applicable) is working correctly.
  • Open or download any assignments from Moodle or your computer in preparation for giving video/audio feedback. Or you may have already marked/annotated the assignments in advance.

3. A Creator records feedback using Panopto

The next step is to record the video feedback in Panopto.

  • Navigate to the assignment folder.
  • Click the ‘+Create’ button.
  • Select Panopto Capture.
  • Adjust the audio, video, and screen settings accordingly. For example, decide whether to include your own video feed in the recording.
  • Record your feedback.
  • The video will be saved to the Moodle-linked folder.

You may wish to edit recordings in Panopto. If you make a mistake, Panopto Capture offers functionality such as the ability to redo or start a new recording before sharing with a student.

Alternatively, if you have already recorded a video outside of Panopto then you can upload the recording to the assignment folder inside the Moodle-linked folder. Click the ‘+Create’ button and select ‘Upload media.’

4. Share the recording

Next, share recording permissions with the individual student. This methods ensures that students can view only their feedback. The recording is NOT shared with the entire cohort.

  • Hover over the recording.
  • Click the share icon.
  • Type in the student’s username.
  • Select the name of the student.
  • Toggle off ‘Send an email to notify people’ if you do not wish for a student to receive a notification.
  • Click ‘Save’ or ‘Send’.
  • The student should now be listed as a Viewer.

If you do not want to make the recording immediately viewable to the student, either leave this step until a later date or change the recording’s availability settings.

5. Paste the link into Moodle assignment feedback

Copy the URL from the video and paste it into a Moodle assignment feedback comments box. This ensures that feedback and grades are saved in one place for students to access. For more information about marking in Moodle see How to mark an assignment in Moodle.

  • Hover over the recording.
  • Click the ‘Share’ icon.
  • Click ‘Copy Link.’
  • Navigate to the appropriate Moodle assignment.
  • Open the grading screen and paste the link for each student in the feedback comments box.
  • Save changes.

6. Paste the link into Moodle assignment feedback

Students can access the video feedback in Panopto by following the link from the Moodle assignment Feedback Comments box. In subsequent years the recordings will still be accessible for students via the assignment folder in Panopto, and linked to from the Moodle archives. Students cannot download the recording.
