Introduction
Level 1 Reasonable AdjustmentPanopto can accommodate audio-only resources, and combined with subscription and notification features, can provide a podcast-like experience.
Usually podcasts are delivered at regular intervals to podcast apps, with listeners notified when new episodes become available. Institutional tools such as Panopto and Moodle can’t work with such apps due to the authentication requirement of staff/students to log in to such systems. However, within Panopto it is possible to create a similar experience. Read more about the benefits of podcasting.
Note: we’ll talk about ‘audio’ podcasts in this article, but the same process can apply to ‘video’ podcasts.
Podcast workflow
The following steps will allow staff (with Creator role) to create a space in Panopto to store your podcast episodes, whilst providing your audience (in the Viewer role) with an email notification when a new episode is added. Students can find the podcasts quickly by visiting the Subscriptions menu item in Panopto.
Step 1: Create a ‘Podcast’ folder – Creator action
Navigate to the relevant Moodle-linked folder. Click Add folder and name it Podcast. This folder will inherit the permissions from its parent folder (which are in turn inherited from the Moodle space). This ensures current staff and students can access the content.
Note that this folder will not display in the Panopto block inside your Moodle space.
Step 2: Enable notifications – Creator action
Select the Podcast folder settings icon and select the option to ‘Notify viewers via email and Microsoft Teams (if connected) when new videos are ready’.

Step 3: Enabling subscription – Viewer action
Share the Podcast folder link with your student cohort and ask them to click the Subscribe button.

Step 4: Enable notifications – Viewer action
Ask students to visit their Panopto profile menu and select User Settings.

In the Notifications tab they should select the option to ‘Notify me via email and Microsoft Teams (if connected) when videos finish processing’.
Step 5: Record the podcast – Creator action
There are multiple ways to record audio and add to your Podcast folder. Once the audio is added there, notification emails will be sent to those with inherited viewing permissions and notifications enabled.
