Moodle snapshots

Published on: 27/08/2026 · Last updated on: 02/09/2026

What are the Moodle snapshots?

Each year, a snapshot of Moodle is taken (on or around 31 July each year) by the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Team. Locked in time, the snapshot will be available to any staff and students enrolled on it at a separate web address (https://moodle-archive.bath.ac.uk) for 6 academic years.

These snapshots are read-only so no edits can be made.

Access permissions to these sites are based upon the memberships that existed at the point of the snapshot creation.

Student access to past content

The main purpose of the snapshots is to allow students to access their previous learning materials and activities as required. This assumes they had access to it at the point of the snapshot being taken. For example, students in Year 2 can still look over their course material from Year 1. Students in Year 3 can still find their course material from Year 2 and Year 1, and so on.

Where are the snapshots?

The sites are accessed from: https://moodle-archive.bath.ac.uk which can be found from the Useful Links menu bar in Moodle. Please note that the Moodle snapshots can only be accessed on campus or through the University of Bath VPN (All Traffic).

Please let your student cohorts know that these sites are available to them, and where to find them.

FAQS

What is captured in the snapshot is exactly what was present at the time of the snapshot. In the run up to the snapshot being taken, every year, communication goes out to remind staff to prepare their Moodle spaces so that the appropriate content will show for students. The snapshots are read-only so we cannot edit them post-snapshot.

You can read about the process here: Archiving Practice Statement. We refer to the sites as ‘snapshots’ rather than ‘archives’ because they are exactly that, a snapshot taken on one day in the year. They are not full archives and should not be relied upon to contain all assessment submissions within a given year. This is a Departmental responsibility, as outlined in the University Records Retention Schedule (Pg 16).

To help with housekeeping, and storage costs, it is helpful if the TEL team can be informed when a Moodle space is no longer needed. Once we delete them, they will no longer be captured in the snapshots. Please email tel@bath.ac.uk with the details if you need spaces removing.
