Re:View (Panopto) for audio and video recordings - Formative

Below is the TEL recommended workflow for using Re:View (also known as Panopto) for audio and video recordings. Moodle is not recommended for audio and video as there is a 50mb upload limit on the platform.

In line with Moodle terminology, on this page teaching staff are referred to as Teachers. Students are referred to as Students.
In line with Re:View terminology, on this page teaching staff are referred to as Creators. Students are referred to as Viewers.
Student video/audio file upload
Students can individually upload a video or audio recording to Re:View. This could be a presentation, instructional video, screencast, or oral submission.
Despite its name, the Re:View assignment folder does not have be used only for summative assessment - it can be used for formative assessment opportunities. The folder is simply a space that students can upload recordings to - similar to a Dropbox or OneDrive folder. For example, students could upload:
- Practise recordings before a summatively assessed piece of work.
- A screen recording of an equation they are finding tricky.
- An audio recording of themselves speaking in a foreign language for feedback on their accuracy.
- A proposal for a project.
Recommended workflow:

A Creator creates an assignment folder within a Moodle-linked folder in Re:View
In Re:View, navigate to the Moodle-linked folder for your unit. Within the folder settings, create an assignment folder. Staff and students should not keep assessed recordings in a personal My Folder in case they leave, are absent from the University for a length of time, or change job role.

A Teacher creates a link to the Re:View assignment folder for students as well audio/video upload instructions
On the Moodle page, a Teacher should create a link to the Re:View assignment folder that students are expected to upload to.
Instructions should be sent to students about expectations for uploading to the Re:View assignment folder. Include:
- The file format.
- Instructions about file length.
- Guidance on creating a recording.
- A further link to the Re:View assignment folder if appropriate.

Viewers upload recordings to Re:View assignment folder
Once a recording has been uploaded, students (Viewers) will not be able to see each other's submissions. Creators can see all of the uploaded recordings in the assignment folder. The student who uploaded the recording can edit and/or remove it at any stage.

Creators watch the recordings
Recordings can be watched by navigating directly to the assignment folder in Re:View.

Teachers can give feedback
For formatively assessed work, Teachers can use a variety of methods for giving feedback. Consider using an offline Moodle assignment for individual feedback, or a Moodle forum or Moodle page resource for group feedback.

Creators can allow viewers to watch other viewers' recordings
Students can be allowed to see each other's recordings if the assignment folder in Re:View is still open.

Creators should close the Re:View assignment folder to prevent any more uploads
Once the Re:View assignment folder is closed, it cannot be opened again for new uploads.
Embed a quiz within a recording
Teachers can embed quizzes within Re:View recording to formatively assess students' knowledge throughout a unit of study.
Recommended workflow:

Creator uploads or moves a recording to a Moodle-linked folder
For retention purposes, recordings for taught units should be located in a Moodle-linked folder in Re:View, not a personal My Folder.

Creator enters editing mode
Hover over the recording. Click 'Edit'.

Creator adds a quiz to the recording
Click on a point on the video timeline to add the quiz. Click the + icon. Click 'Add quiz.'

Add a quiz question
A quiz question can be added to the recording. Question types include: True/False, Multiple Choice, Multiple Select, Fill In The Blank

Amend question settings.
Question settings include: Answer choices, correct answer, correct answer explanation.

Add another question at the same point in the recording, or save the current quiz and amend quiz settings.
Click 'Done' to save the quiz. Settings include: retake the quiz, show grade, review explanations, block moving on, and reorder questions.

Either save the edits by clicking 'Apply'. Or add a further quiz at another point in the recording.
If adding a further quiz, use the video timeline to navigate to another point in the recording and repeat steps 2-6.

Viewers watch the recording and answer quiz questions as per settings.
The quiz will appear for Viewers at the chosen point on the timeline.

Creators can view quiz results on each recording
Hover over the recording, click 'Settings', then click 'Quiz Results.'

The recording can be hidden
If you no longer want Viewers to take the quiz, you can hide the recording by adjusting the availability settings.

Results can be reset
Before re-using the recording, results can be reset by clicking 'Settings', then 'Quiz Results', then 'Clear.'
