Pedagogical Research Network – Scholarship and career development for education-focused academics: Building your profile as an education specialist
Please join the PedR Network for our first event of AY2627.
For education-focused academics: Using DARSHE to recognise your expertise, develop your educational scholarship and plan your next career steps
Getting promoted in higher education can be challenging, particularly for colleagues pursuing education-focused careers. In this interactive session, Professor Julie Hulme will draw on her own career and the DARSHE framework (Gann & Hulme, 2025) to explore the diverse ways in which we can develop and demonstrate educational scholarship.
Together, we will explore how educational practice can become the starting point for scholarship: identifying questions and areas of expertise from your teaching, developing these through scholarly inquiry, turning this activity into outputs, and demonstrating its reach and impact. We will consider how this can contribute both to the wider evidence base for teaching and learning and to your own recognition and career development.
You will have an opportunity to map where you are now, identify where you might develop your scholarship, and consider realistic next steps for building your profile as an education specialist – while also thinking about how to do so sustainably.
Bio: Julie is Professor of Psychology Education and Academic Director of the Nottingham Institute of Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. She is a Chartered Psychologist, Principal Fellow of Advance HE and National Teaching Fellow, and has a national reputation for championing education-focused academic careers.
