From difficult to enriching: navigating difficult conversations in Learning & Teaching
A two-part professional development series for university educators.
Join us online for two interactive one-hour sessions where we’ll explore practical skills for navigating difficult conversations and supporting learners in interacting, collaborating and learning through differences in cultural backgrounds, beliefs, ideologies, and opinions. You’ll develop strategies to transform challenging classroom moments into enriching learning opportunities, while building cultural awareness that makes diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives a source of richness in your teaching. Through real-world case studies, you’ll gain confidence in facilitating sensitive discussions and creating inclusive learning environments.

This is part 1 of a 2-part series focusing on supporting diverse experiences in learning and teaching. The session will be recorded.
On successful completion of both parts of the series focusing on supporting diverse experiences in learning and teaching, you should be able to:
- Support learners in understanding and practising cultural competence.
- Demonstrate how to work productively through challenging conversations.
- Design curricula and learning and teaching activities that embrace diversity and take a strengths-based approach.
Presenter details:
Samantha Clarke is a Senior Lecturer in the Educational Innovation team at the University of Sydney, where she works with educators to enhance learning experiences for all students. As Program Director of the university-wide Modular Professional Learning Framework, she drives initiatives to improve teaching and learning practices across the institution. Samantha’s expertise in technology-enhanced learning, equity, and academic development and leadership has earned her international, national, and university teaching awards. She is the lead author of the Green Guide: Enhancing the learning experiences of students from equity backgrounds (2024) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Jessica Frawley is a Senior Lecturer in Academic Development and Leadership in the Educational Innovation team in the DVC (Education) Portfolio. She is the Director of the Sydney Educational Fellowship Program, and an Honorary Associate in the Sydney School of Architecture, Design, and Planning. She has won national and university teaching awards for her work in student engagement and technology, and is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK.
