Assessment and feedback

Assessment is a vital meeting point between teaching and learning. As well as evidencing student achievement, assessment can enrich the learning of our students (through the feedback they receive) and also provide colleagues with invaluable feedback on their learners’ progress and development. Because assessment serves multiple functions, this can make it one of the hardest aspects of teaching and learning to get right, for both external bodies, for students and for staff.

How can we support you?

This space will introduce you to practical guidance, resources and case studies to help you with assessment design, delivery and development whether you are creating a new assessment, reviewing your existing assessments at either a course or unit level or want to explore colleagues’ creative approaches to solving some of the common challenges associated with assessment and feedback.

We recognise that each course, department or faculty may require a different approach to enhancing their assessments. We would therefore encourage you to get in touch so that we can work with you and your colleagues to address those aspects of assessment and feedback which are relevant to your discipline and student cohort.

A triangulated approach

When aligned, marking criteria, assignment briefs and feedback can increase the validity and reliability of the assessment and alleviate unnecessary pressure for all involved.

Our guidance sections introduce a range of practical approaches which can be used at course and unit level to support course teams to foster greater clarity and consistency, whilst also ensuring discipline flexibility and autonomy.

Assessment and feedback in practice

Working with colleagues across the Faculties and School we have identified three key areas of focus relating to assessment and feedback which build on the great work staff achieved via Curriculum Transformation and align to our institutional feedback action plan:

  • Large cohort assessment
  • Group work assessment
  • Artificial Intelligence
