Marking criteria, mark schemes and rubrics, all help provide clarity for students and staff alike. They help students direct their efforts effectively, and help staff allocate marks and focus their feedback. When paired with clear assessment briefs, the number of queries can be reduced and marking and moderation can be streamlined.  

Where we are now

  • In line with our OfS condition of registration B5, the University’s trajectory is toward greater alignment on marking criteria at a Faculty/School level and more clarity and consistency in the creation and implementation of local marking criteria or mark schemes, whilst also ensuring discipline flexibility and autonomy.
  • When aligned, marking criteria, assignment briefs and feedback can increase the validity and reliability of the assessment and alleviate unnecessary pressure for all involved. Your Faculty may well have specific policies you will need to refer to. For example, HSS have collated their guidance on this into one HSS Sharepoint site.
