Curriculum and Academic Development Team

What the CAD team does

The Curriculum and Academic Development (CAD) team is a group brimming with diverse expertise in teaching and learning across the HE sector and beyond. We work collaboratively with colleagues campus-wide to research, prepare and disseminate a variety of resources, and offer specialist advice aligned with best practice in pedagogy and the guiding themes and principles of the institution.

How can we help you?

The CAD team are organised across the following broad areas, but work collaboratively on activity and in partnership with the other CLT teams. Click below to find out more about how we can support you in each area of activity.

These two areas of pedagogic expertise are closely intertwined. Both focus on supporting the planning of good practice in teaching to facilitate good outcomes and experiences for learners.

Curriculum design is a course-wide approach, taking a top-down view to shape the sequence of knowledge, skills and assessment to support teaching and learning.

Learning design takes a bottom-up approach, building from planning individual activities in a learning environment to shaping how units fit together and form part of the whole curriculum.

The CAD team would be delighted to support you in all areas of curriculum and learning design. For example, we can offer guidance with:

  • Writing course and unit intended learning outcomes
  • Sequencing learning
  • Planning for engagement in learning
  • Designing learning activities and resources
  • Planning for the diverse needs of learners
  • Assessment and feedback design
  • Marking criteria development
  • Group work implementation and assessment
  • Pedagogic problem-solving

Designing and developing formative and summative assessment approaches that engage students and support their learning, whilst remaining robust and fair measures of academic achievement.

We can offer guidance with:

  • Choosing effective assessment methods
  • Marking criteria development
  • Embedding effective formative assessment and helpful feedback
  • Group work implementation and assessment
  • Academic integrity
  • Supporting your students with the use of generative AI

The CLT provides a wide-ranging Professional Development Programme for all staff who teach or support learning.
