Event Details
Lots of different software tools are available for managing references. The purpose of these tools is to help you collect and store references to sources of information such as articles, reports or books. The tools also enable you to cite and reference those sources of information in your chosen style. This can save you a lot of time and effort, particularly if you need to quickly reformat the style of your references when submitting a paper to a publisher.
The University supports EndNote Online and EndNote Desktop, but you may find that another product is favoured in your department or within your research group. The first part of the session will help you to compare various tools in order to find out, for example, whether or not they are free, how they work, their strengths/weaknesses, and whether or not you can share references with your colleagues. In this way you can make a more informed choice of the best product to use.
The second (optional) part of the session will cover the basics of using one of the University’s preferred tools, EndNote Online. The activity will take you through registration for the service, saving and storing references from databases, the Library catalogue and other tools e.g. Google Scholar, as well as citing while you write in Word using your preferred referencing style.
By the end of this session you will:
- understand how reference management software can help you to both save time and be more consistent in your referencing;
- be more aware of the range of software available – e.g. EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero, Papers – this may help you select the most appropriate or cost-effective software tool for your needs;
- have stored a number of references using EndNote and inserted them into a Word document
