Have you tried to access academic articles online, only to be asked to pay before reading? What is SciHub and is it legal? Do you need to sign the copyright agreement given to you by the publisher of your article?
The open access movement is transforming scholarly communications. Major research funders, UK government and the University of Bath are all strong supporter of open access, placing requirements on researchers to make their publications open access. But there’s a lot of confusion and mixed messages about what open access is and how to achieve it. This short workshop will give clear, practical answers to the questions: What is open access? Why does open access matter? How do I make my research open access?
After attending this workshop, you will:
- know what open access is and be aware of its role in current developments in scholarly communications;
- be aware of the drivers and benefits of open access, including funder requirements and the ‘open access citation advantage’;
- understand copyright options;
- understand the two forms of open access (‘green’ and ‘gold’) and their advantages and disadvantages;
- be able to comply with University of Bath and funder open access policies;
- know how to access funds and support for open access available within the University of Bath
