Event Details

SciFinder is the most comprehensive source of information in chemistry and chemistry related topics. It provides an index to journal articles, patents and chemical data. The first half of the session will focus on topic searching: although it is very straightforward to enter a topic in SciFinder, because of the size of the database you may find too many results. We will give you some hints and tips for focusing in on the information you need.  Next we will look at how to search for specific compounds using chemical name, CAS registry number or molecular formula, in order to find chemical and physical properties. SciFinder also enables you to draw and search for chemical structures, substructures and reactions: the second half of the session will focus on these types of search. Participants who will not need to use structure searching in their research are welcome to attend for the first hour only.  This will be a hands-on session in a PC lab, giving you an opportunity to work through example searches.

After attending this workshop, you will:

  • be better able to perform a topic search in SciFinder
  • be able to find chemical property information using SciFinder
  • know how to use the drawing tool in SciFinder
  • know how to search for structures, substructures and reactions

To save time, please make sure you register for access to SciFinder before the session and bring your username and password with you.
