Event Details
This session will provide an overview of the best resources for finding journal articles, information and data to support engineering research. The session begins with an overview and key skills for searching electronic databases effectively, with a worked example and demonstration using Compendex.
During the first part of the session we will look in detail at the main engineering database, Compendex, considered the most comprehensive engineering database in the world. It covers 20+ million records from 1970 onward in all areas of engineering, including cross-displinary and scientific areas, e.g. applied physics and optics, bioengineering, biotechnology, food science, materials science, medical devices, mining and nanotechnology. Non-engineers are welcome to attend the session. For example, scientists may prefer to attend the first part to explore Compendex as an alternative or complementary search tool to Web of Science or Scopus. The activity exploring Compendex will also include a contrast with Business Source Complete – excellent for all areas of management (including engineering) but also including trade/industry/society/news publications as well as scholarly output.
In the second part of the session, we cover other specialist services, focusing on finding literature, data, patents and standards. The resources covered include IEEE Xplore, the Construction Information Service and SAE Mobilus, as well as a brief introduction to Knovel Library and ESDU, plus databases for patent and standards. This will be an interactive session with time for you to use only the databases most relevant to your research.
After attending this workshop, you will:
- be able to select the most appropriate engineering databases for your research needs
- be able to make effective use of these databases in your research
