Databases are useful for both storing and using your data effectively. Using a relational database serves several purposes:
- it keeps your data separate from your analysis. This means there is no risk of accidentally changing data when you analyse it
- if we get new data we can run and re-run queries to find all the data that meets certain criteria
- it is fast, even for large amounts of data
- it improves quality control of data entry and you have a record of what you have done to the data throughout your project
- the concepts of relational database querying are core to understanding how to do similar things using programming languages such as R or Python
After this session you will:
- be familiar with the meaning of a ‘relational database’ and the benefits of working with databases rather than standalone spreadsheets
- be familiar with the basic SQL functions and their application to data manipulation
- be able to join tables together in an SQL query
- be aware of good practice for documenting your SQL code
This session will use materials from the Data Carpentry Data Organisation in Spreadsheets lesson Copyright (c) Data Carpentry CC BY 4.0 Licence and the Library Carpentry SQL lesson Copyright (c) Library Carpentry CC BY 4.0 Licence
