Event Details

This online workshop is recommended for all staff who communicate with any form of a document, via email, the web or through Moodle, etc.

The aim of this workshop is to raise awareness of accessibility issues faced by many students and staff. The session will include practical examples of working with inaccessible materials.

We will look at ways to avoid creating inaccessible documents and will provide simple guidelines to help you produce documents that can be accessed by all. We are hoping to promote good practice and raise awareness of accessibility and why it is so important.

The session will be led by the University of Bath’s Assistive Technologists Luiza Bell and William Trimble.

Background Information:

In September 2018, a new set of regulations called the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations came into force. The regulations strengthen rules around accessibility and, in particular, digital accessibility. Digital accessibility is the ability of a website, mobile application or electronic document (e.g. MS Word/PowerPoint/Excel and PDFs) to be easily navigated and understood by a wide range of users, including those users who have visual, auditory, motor or cognitive disabilities. Websites, such as Moodle (and their digital content) created or substantially changed after September 2018 must be accessible on or before 23 September 2019; websites created before September 2018 must be accessible on or before September 2020. In other words, new teaching materials created after 23 September 2019 must meet the Digital Accessibility regulations, where appropriate.
