Event Details
Highly recommended to: postdoctoral research staff
This session is aimed primarily at those who aspire to a longer term teaching-only or teaching and research career within Higher Education. We will explore what HE teaching careers involve, the skills and experience needed and what HE recruiters are looking for, and help you to reflect on your current teaching experience and plan to build on that in the future.
In advance of the session you will be asked to find a job advert relating to HE teaching, or your own professional services area, and identify the activities involved and the skills and experience asked for. We will debrief this in the session, and provide the opportunity for you to identify and reflect on your own teaching experience and approach. We will then move on to think about the possible career pathways available in HE teaching, which might be right for you and how to market your teaching skills and experience effectively in CVs, cover letters and statements of teaching interest/teaching philosophy. The session will include a brief discussion of different philosophical approaches to teaching and how to write an effective teaching statement/teaching philosophy, and you’ll be given some preparatory reading on this.
In the final section we’ll hear from an early career lecturer who will talk about their own career pathway in HE teaching, what the role involves and what they have learned about effective practice.
