Facilitating Cognitive Access to our Teaching Materials:

1 hour workshop with Abby Osborne

Thursday 19th May, 11.15-12.15

When we think about the accessibility of our teaching materials, we tend to focus on ensuring ‘physical’ access to our resources, through techniques such as using certain fonts, background colours or captions for images. Yet, we can broaden this focus and also facilitate ‘cognitive’ access to our materials. Techniques such as dual coding (using images to support words) and consideration of how we organise and sequence teaching content can help boost student assimilation, processing and recall of knowledge.

This one-hour workshop will cover a range of practical teaching strategies which you can use to facilitate cognitive access to learning materials. There will be opportunity to share strategies with colleagues and apply the approaches to your own teaching.
