The masterclass an opportunity for all supervisors, with either some or significant experience, to discuss research supervisory challenges with their colleagues and an expert facilitator, Hugh Kearns.
Supervisors will be able to share their experiences of what works and what doesn’t and get suggestions for dealing with complex situations. The masterclass will also draw on the Hugh’s experience of working with thousands of research students and research supervisors across the world over 25 years. As well as facilitating workshops for groups of supervisors, he has coached individuals and teams, lectured at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Berkeley and Stanford, and published numerous books for PhD students, postdocs, and doctoral supervisors – including The Seven Secrets of Highly Successful Research Students and Supervising PhD Students: A Practical Guide and Toolkit.
This masterclass will cover issues such as:
- Dealing with different types of students
- Helping students to write
- Encouraging students to show you their writing
- Giving constructive feedback
- Students who write too much
- Students for whom English is not their first language
- Motivating stalled students
- Problem situations
This session will be run on Zoom. A calendar invite with url will be sent 3 working days in advance.
