Event Details

Conversation with Cake is an informal, monthly get together for academics and related staff who are interested in discussing topics relevant to learning and teaching at the University. Each month we have a paper for discussion that attendees are encouraged to read at least some of before attending, but we still welcome those that haven’t had the time to do so. As this meeting will be in person, tea, coffee and cake are provided (and there will also be a form of baked goods!)

In March we will be discussing;

Cook, E. Practice-Based Engineering: Mathematical Competencies and Micro-Credentials. Int. J. Res. Undergrad. Math. Ed. 7, 284–305 (2021). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40753-020-00128-3

This is a long paper, if you’re interested in how to teach mathematics in engineering start at the beginning. If you’re interested in microcredentials and just in time teaching try the section on modularisation. If you’re interested in publishing your curriculum transformation efforts, read and critique the course design section. If you’re interested in learning outcomes for maths try the bit in the middle with examples. If you want to know how to write up something that didn’t work, try the discussion.
