This workshop is an opportunity for early career academics, particularly at the transition point into a first leadership role, to stop and take stock of your leadership and be strategic. What are you aiming for – what is your vision? What needs to change to develop your research leadership skills? How do you balance competing priorities? We will do some benchmarking of where you are now and some action planning towards where you want to be.
Intended learning outcomes
After this session, participants should be able to:
- Understand their strengths/areas for development
- Plan realistic actions and set appropriate goals and priorities to excel in their personal, professional, and academic endeavours
- Have some tools to plan their career/ research strategy
- Navigate the performance expectations of their role

Facilitator: Dr Steve Joy
Steve is a Leadership and Career Consultant with over thirteen years’ experience in supporting research and academic staff.
He has worked as an Adviser in the Postdoc and Fellows Development Centre at Imperial College London and, for six years, in the Postdoc Careers Service at the University of Cambridge, where he specialised in academic careers and fellowship funding. Latterly, he was the Head of Researcher Development at Cambridge, where he designed and delivered leadership programmes for research and academic staff. In 2020, Steve became Deputy Director of the UKRI-funded Future Leaders Fellows Development Network, with particular responsibility for leadership training, 360 feedback, and career development.
Formerly, Steve was a researcher in German Studies, completing a PhD on the fiction of Thomas Mann; he also supervised and lectured for five years
