08/03/202212:30 pm - 1:30 pmOption - CLT Lunchtime Hub- Sustainability in Assessment & Feedback

Enhancing assessment and feedback for everyone: exploring multiple ‘sustainabilities’.

‘Changes in practice implemented during the last year have afforded opportunities to reflect on traditional ways of learning, teaching and assessing and to interrogate where time, energy and resources are best directed. Viewing ‘sustainability’ as a value, a practice, and a behaviour, I will explore how various interpretations of the term can potentially work together to bring about an improved experience for staff and students.’

Juliet Eve is Head of the Learning and Teaching Hub at the University of Brighton has worked at the  University of Brighton for over 20 years, both as a lecturer in information and media studies and, for the last decade, as an educational developer. 07/04/202212:15 pm - 1:05 pmOption - CLT Lunchtime Hub: Levelling the playing field? The immediate effect of Covid-19 on the attainment of students

Lawrence Shaw and Matt Tranter from Nottingham Trent University join us for a lunchtime hub session to discuss their recent research into how assessment performance can alter under varying conditions.

‘The 2019/20 Level 4 mathematics cohort at Nottingham Trent University sat a full set of mid-year assessments in January 2020 under completely normal circumstances. However, the Covid-19 lockdown meant that their end of year assessments, along with all of their teaching and learning from March 2020 onwards, moved fully online. This has given us a unique opportunity to understand how the same cohort perform in contrasting situations.

In this session we consider the issue of ethnic minority and Widening Participation student attainment in assessments and how that changed post-lockdown. In particular, we find that Widening Participation students saw a decrease in attainment but that attainment of students from ethnic minorities improved. We will discuss the results of our analysis at a modular level to try to understand the reasons for these changes in attainment as well as touching upon other issues raised from the move to online teaching, learning, and assessment. We hope to use the last 25 minutes of this session for an open discussion on the issues raised by this talk.’
