Cross Purposes is light-hearted and fast-paced course that has a deeper purpose: to confront and examine the awkwardness that causes many people’s dislike of attending professional networking events, and chart a course through calmer waters. At the very heart of many people’s dislike of networking seems to be the word itself. It effortlessly conjures up images of insincerity, manipulation and forced extraversion constructed in a calculated manner and set within a false environment. Although this description can be highly appropriate, it needn’t be, and this course explores our natural desire for inclusion when it comes to being an active part of a reciprocal interconnected group. Networking is little more than a social activity with a business mindset, and our natural behaviours are more than enough to support us in this endeavour, provided we can see the wood for the trees.
This course seeks to challenge participants to distinguish for themselves between the baby and the bathwater. Do we have to network? How can we network in such a way as to feel genuine yet be effective? Why do we sometimes feel like a spare part at networking events? Why does everyone else seem so much more confident than we feel?
Cross Purposes asks participants to challenge themselves through disclosure, experiences and discussion, and then builds a framework through which each may see their relationship with this natural activity through different eyes.
