Background Information:
In September 2018, a new set of regulations called the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations came into force. The regulations strengthen rules around accessibility and, in particular, digital accessibility. Digital accessibility is the ability of a website, mobile application or electronic document (e.g. MS Word/PowerPoint/Excel and PDFs) to be easily navigated and understood by a wide range of users, including those users who have visual, auditory, motor or cognitive disabilities. Websites, such as Moodle (and their digital content) created or substantially changed after September 2018 must be accessible on or before 23 September 2019; websites created before September 2018 must be accessible on or before September 2020. In other words, new teaching materials created after 23 September 2019 must meet the new Digital Accessibility regulations, where appropriate.
Moodle as a VLE platform uses the latest web technologies and is digitally accessible. However, how do you make content such as Word Documents and Powerpoints accessible; how do you know what content is already compliant and what needs changes; and perhaps most importantly,what as the wider benefits of accessible content to all students’ learning? We recognize this poses a significant challenge to staff, not just in terms of understanding the new regulations, but also the time needed to create good learning resources.
We invite you to attend this workshop to discover a new tool, called Blackboard Ally, that will be appearing on Moodle from September 2019.
Workshop Details:
This workshop will:
- provide a brief overview of the new Accessibility Regulations, why they matter, and how they can benefit all students, not just those with specific accessibility requirements.
- demonstrate a new tool, called Blackboard Ally, that will be appearing on Moodle from September 2019.
- explain how Ally can help you understand the accessibility of your content, provide top tips on how to improve content, and provide you with reports so that you can gain a better understanding of the content on your courses.
- illustrate how students can now request alternative formats of your documents from within Moodle, which will be generated automatically. Learn how this can benefit their learning!
